CORE
ELA (English language Arts) 7: This course is designed to allow students to gain an ever increasing skill set in the areas of literacy and writing. Utilizing a unique “Workshop” approach each student will be challenged to grow and develop into a better reader and writer throughout the year.
SOCIAL STUDIES 7: This course is designed to help students understand the culture, geography, and history of the Eastern Hemisphere. Students will use their learning to make connections to their own lives and to analyze how world events play a part in the course of global events past and present.
SCIENCE 7: This course is designed to be an integrated, hands-on experience for students. The course utilizes a digital curriculum to explore the scientific method and its application to various concepts.
SUCCESS FOR TOMORROW (SFT): This one semester course allows students to begin planning or their future. By completing the state mandated EDP students will grow to understand their unique skill sets and can begin to plan for how to successfully maneuver around high school scheduling, college selection, while also gaining practical career planning advice.
HEALTH: This one semester course focuses on some of the “traditional” topics in health (nutrition, physical activity, alcohol, tobacco, etc…) This course is designed in such a way as to encourage positive communication with adults and parents and allows for students to understand complex issues associated with adolescence.
MATH 7: This course is aligned to the Common Core Standards with the purpose of allowing students to gain mastery of concepts and skills for greater success in future advanced mathematics courses. Students will be able to utilize enhance their understanding.
MATH 8: This course is aligned to the Common Core Standards with the purpose of allowing students who successfully completed Advanced 6th grade math to gain mastery of concepts and skills for greater success in future advanced mathematics courses. Students will be able to utilize online resources, classroom resources, and hands on experiences to further enhance their understanding.
SPANISH A 7: This year long course is designed to give students the first half of a high school foreign language requirement. Taken in conjunction with Spanish 8, students who successfully complete both courses will have satisfied their foreign language requirement for high school graduation.
ELECTIVES
Choir A 7: This year long course will help develop students into personal instruments. Using their own voices to create music, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of how a variety of sounds can be blended together to make music and how each individual can make beautiful music.
Band A 7: This year long course will help develop students into more proficient musical performers. Each grade level class will be offered instruction on how to develop musically while exploring elements of musical theory, performance, and instrumentation.
Drama 7: This semester course is designed to incorporate the Common Core Standards for Speaking and Listening as outlined in the ELA curriculum. Students will be expected to gain greater confidence and skill in the art of public speaking and communicating to an audience.
Art I: Students will experience and explore the basic Elements of Art. Students will be encouraged to “Think Like Artists,” stretch their imagination, explore new art materials, develop craft, envision end results through brainstorming, and create extraordinary Art work! To practice reflection and being a successful 21st Century citizen, students will each create an electronic portfolio - using google’s Blogger - to digitally store artwork, collaborate with their peers, and share their hard work with an audience.
Art II: Prerequisite: ART I
Students will focus on creating artwork utilizing the Principles of Design. Students will be encouraged to express themselves through their work, practice persistence through trial & error, observe the art world around them, and connect their tasks to real-life careers relating to art. Students will build on their knowledge from Art I, including their reflection skills on their developing ePortfolio.
PE: This semester course is designed for students who wish to gain a personal fitness experience. Each grade level class will be expected complete activities appropriate to their level. Activities such as aerobics, circuit training, and other personal fitness classes will be offered. This semester course is designed for students who wish to gain increased skills in a variety of team sports. Each grade level class will be expected to complete activities appropriate to their level. Sports such as volleyball, basketball, kickball, etc…will be offered.
Journalism: This semester course is designed to allow students who enjoy creative writing and investigating to create digital newsletters and school newspapers. Students will be given strategies for refining their writing craft by describing the world around them.
STEAM: This semester course allows students to get hands on experience that connects major concepts from all core areas through the lens of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. It’s all about doing science to learn science.
STEAM II: This semester course allows students to get more hands on experience that connects major concepts from all core areas through the lens of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. It’s all about doing science to learn science! You must have teacher approval and successfully completed STEAM I.
